ligne claire

Unbeknownst to me, the style I first became known for had a name: ligne claire, or the clear line.

Early on I was influenced by European cartoonists and illustrators, notably Serge Clerc. Ten years into my career, an art director said the client was looking for that "Tin Tin" look that I do. I guess I picked it up by osmosis, as I'd never been a fan of Hergé.

From the Wikipedia entry: Ligne claire (French for "clear line") is a style of drawing pioneered by Hergé, the Belgian creator of The Adventures of Tintin. It is a style of drawing that uses clear strong lines of uniform importance, and does not emphasize selected objects by different thicknesses of line, by shading, or by cross-hatching. (For this reason it is sometimes also called the democracy of lines.

I love that - the democracy of lines. Maybe I am a fan of Hergé after all.
